Smoker warns young people of health hazards

By ForestLakeNews

FOREST LAKE — Betty Lamppa, a long time Lakes Area Youth Service Bureau (LAYSB) volunteer, often speaks to young people about smoking and the effects of using tobacco. She talks to the kids through a tube in her throat, emphasizing why they should quit smoking today. Betty had a laryngectomy to enable her to breathe after years of smoking damaged her throat and voice box. She talks slowly and often has to pause to catch her breath. The kids listen without making a sound.
