Community Ed keeps kids off the couch

By ForestLakeNews

3,400 youth participated last year Clint Riese Sports Editor It’s easy to lose track of all the programming offered by the school district’s Community Ed program. In the athletics division alone, coordinator Tim Conley, his staff and a volunteer corps numbering in the hundreds work year-round to make sure the recreation needs of the area’s youth are being met. Sports in its purest form was on display at a recent 3rd/4th grade volleyball match. (Photo by Clint Riese) This winter, 37 volleyball teams are playing twice a week, about 600 kids will play in a basketball league, and another 75 will be in a jam-packed, third-year wrestling program led by the high school team’s staff. In the fall, over 100 youth took part in a growing flag football league. Baseball is Community Ed’s crown jewel, with elementary-age participation nearing 1,000, or 67 percent.

When I was young, we battled those pesky flies!

By ForestLakeNews

Bob Swenson Times Columnist There were house flies and there were green (we called them bottle) flies and there were horse flies and there were deer flies and there were countless other varieties too numerous to mention. No matter what their ilk they were all pests, to say nothing of all the possible disease they generously passed on to mankind. Whether you lived on a rural homestead or in the city there was a need to either control or rid ourselves of this annoying nuisance. This discourse is aimed at attempting to enlighten the present almost fly-free urban-living public about the many steps taken to keep our domiciles a bit nuisance free never completely accomplishing this goal until the past few years. The problem back then was of our own making in the fact that garbage most times was just set out somewhere out back and not often in a good container where it was soon exposed to rot and decay which, of course, was an ideal breeding ground for a fly to lay its eggs and they were not long in hatching and the young had a ready food source as they grew. One of the biggest contributors to fly breeding was what we called the “dump grounds” where everything including raw garbage lay on top of the ground and not covered

What will happen? How far can we go?” The author of the quotes, K. David Hargrove, succinctly laid down a three-question challenge that continues to be meaningful today for Masquers Theatre Company in Forest Lake
