(File photo) Jennifer Mevissen Staff Writer The 66 individuals selected to be inducted into the newly-formed Forest Lake Area Schools Hall of Fame were chosen for their outstanding contributions, not only to the district and the community, but in many cases, the country and world as a whole. As such, they will be honored on Monday, June 6 to coincide with the annual Academic Awards Night which at Forest Lake High School. The following is a noteworthy highlight of just some of the individuals who will be inducted into the inaugural class this spring: Early graduates George Simmons was the first and only graduate in Forest Lake High School Class of 1912. He went on to become a successful businessman in the community. Rollin Johnson (‘13) has a place in the school’s sports history books by becoming the first Forest Lake varsity basketball player to score 20 points in a game

Tennis team shuts out Andover Clint Riese Sports Editor The cancellation of last Saturday’s Herzog Invitational in Stillwater caused disappointment in the Ranger tennis camp. Not only would Forest Lake not get to defend its title, coach Greg Patchin could have used the matches to help sort out a cloudy situation in his doubles lineup.
Broadband capabilities will expand in Linwood
Town board will connect town hall, fire hall Alice Pickering Linwood Reporter Broadband capabilities are to be available in Linwood Township in the near future, as part of the Connect Anoka County Project. Assistant Anoka County Attorney Kathy Timm and Fazil Bhimani, technical consultant for the Connect Anoka County Project Board, provided an explanation of the project for Linwood supervisors on Tuesday, April 12. Supervisors opted to have the equipment placed in both the town hall and the fire station and determine the date to connect to the service at a future meeting. Once available, the cost to connect will be a $75 monthly fee for 100 megabytes-per-second (mbps) service for each site. No charges are incurred until service is established. The vote was unanimous. This is a county-led effort to increase the amount of fiber optic cable in Anoka County
A Big Lift in Wyoming
When police and fire department budgets run short, friends within the community often times step forward to save the day. Such was the case in Wyoming this spring when the fire department needed funds to purchase rescue air bags. The Hallberg Family Foundation provided a $2800 grant to the fire department to cover the full purchase of the rescue equipment. The air bags are used to lift heavy objects, such as a vehicle, off crash victims and other vehicles
Loo to lead lacrosse boys
Hockey assistant takes over second-year program Clint Riese Sports Editor The Forest Lake boys’ lacrosse team will have a new head coach this spring for its second season as a varsity sport. Jon Loo will take on the role formerly held by Rahal Cheikh. Loo will be a familiar face to some Ranger fans. He has served as an assistant boys’ hockey coach at the high school here for four seasons
Scholarship applications due March 31
Goal is to award $80,000 this year Cliff Buchan News Editor The pace is about to quicken for the Community Scholarship Foundation in Forest Lake School District 831. Thursday, March 31 is the application deadline for this year’s scholarship awards. The volunteer CSF board has set a target of $80,000 for scholarships this spring.
School seeks old photos for 100-year anniversary events
High School’s 100th graduating class In conjunction with the celebrations and events surrounding the 100th Graduating Class from Forest Lake High School this spring, the Forest Lake Times and Forest Lake Area Schools are joining together to create a booklet to commemorate the history of Forest Lake Area Schools. To aid in the development of this project, booklet planners are looking for old photographs of anything school-related from about 1900 to the present. “We are looking for photos particularly from the years 1900 – 1960, or even older if possible,” said Ross Bennett, communications coordinator for the school district
Dance Factory announces summer program
As the 10th season of Fox’s American Idol launches, and as American fascination with all things song and dance from Disney’s High School Musical to Fox’s Glee continues, some area youth are wondering how and when they can land their own spot on stage. Heidi Leeson, a vocal instructor at The Music Connection since the early 1990’s, who has been very active in working with and performing in Forest Lake-area theater, recently started coaching musical stage performance for ages 8 and up at The Dance Factory in Forest Lake.
