A Forest Lake School District 831 administrator has been named to a panel charged with developing a new evaluation system for Minnesota teachers. Dr. Lloyd Komatsu, director of assessment & testing, was one of 35 members named to the panel by Minnesota Department of Education Commissioner Brenda Cassellius. Mandated by the legislature as part of the new teacher evaluation law passed during the 2011 special session, the Teacher Evaluation Working Group will develop an evaluation model to be used by school districts and teachers in the event they do not agree on a local evaluation model. “This task force has the opportunity to develop a rich and meaningful tool that will benefit students and assist teachers in their continued quest to become outstanding professional educators,” Cassellius said

School levy for 2012 taxes comes in at $15.5 million

Cliff Buchan News Editor A new property tax levy for collection in 2012 is now on the books in Forest Lake School District 831. The school board voted 6-0 with one member absent Thursday night to certify the 2011 levy at $15,554,860. The new tax levy is actually $6612 lower than the 2010 levy for local property taxes that are being collected this year. Property owners should see little or no change in their property taxes tied to the local levy. The levy includes $6.336 million of voter-approved referendum dollars tied to the Nov. 8 renewal of the district’s operating levy.

FL school operating levy renewal wins big

Residents of the Forest Lake Area School District handed school officials a commanding victory on Tuesday by easily passing an eight-year operating levy renewal that will bring in $6.2 million a year for the general fund. With all but one of the district’s nine precincts reported Tuesday night, the operating levy was passing with 4821 yes votes compared to 2839 no votes. The one Lino Lakes precinct yet to report is not large. The levy carried seven of the eight precincts reported, losing just one of the Lino Lakes precincts where one vote was cast. Voters in the Scandia, Linwood, Columbus, Forest Lake, Wyoming and two Lino Lakes precincts were in favor of the operating levy that will generate $725 for each weighted pupil unit. In the large Forest Lake precinct, the levy carried easily with 2053 yes votes to 1082 no votes.

New contract for school tech specialists

Technology specialists working in the Forest Lake School District finally have a new working agreement. The school board on Thursday, Sept. 1 ratified the new agreement for the Forest Lake Technology Specialists Association for the period July 1, 2010 through June 30, 2012. Employees have been working on a continuing contract basis during negotiations. The two-year contract calls for a salary and step for the employee group

Karen P. Gates, 69, St. Cloud, formerly of Forest Lake, died Friday, Aug. 19 in St. Cloud. She was an educator who taught at a number of schools in Minnesota and worked as a curriculum director in the Sauk Rapids/Rice School District for more than 20 years

Janet Palmer will retire from Forest View Elementary post

Dr. Janet Palmer, principal at Forest View Elementary School, has announced her retirement after 35 years of work in Forest Lake School District 831. Palmer’s retirement notice was approved by the school board on Thursday, March 3. She is just one of three principals to lead Forest View since its opening in 1968. Palmer became principal at the elementary school in 1993 following the retirement of Gerald Lunde who held the post for 24 years
